This geological walk is like turning the pages of a history book: the rocks and landscape tell the story of the mountains, from their origins to the way they are shaped today. The rocks and their fossil and mineral content bear witness to how the mountains came about and how geological events have shaped the earth's surface over time.

In prehistoric times, Troi Paian, a path leading from the Valle Isarco over the Dolomite passes to Veneto, used to go over Passo Gardena. An ancient hunters' resting place beneath the largest block of Dolomite rock on the Plan de Frea meadows may be found here. It is a fascinating spot from a landscape point of view that takes you back to Stone Age times.

This is a walking experience combining history, culture and nature. It leads through old cultural landscapes and past historical farmsteads to show clearly the special features of old Val Gardena farms.

The turn-of-the-century villas and former workshops in Ortisei impress on us how the wooden toy and sculpture industries influenced the face of the village and still shape it today.
